The summertime usually means more time outside and frequent trips to the beach. While enjoying the long sunny days and making the most of your leisure time, it’s essential to take extra good care of your skin.

    Table of Contents

    • Use a Light Moisturizer
    • Always Wear Sunscreen
    • Find Shade
    • Drink Plenty of Water

    Use a Light Moisturizer

Even with proper protection, your skin can still dry out more easily in the summertime because of the high temperatures and longer days. When your skin tans in the sun, it can become dry and flakey. Over time, your skin can lose its natural glow. Even though the air isn’t as dry as it might be in the winter, it’s important to regularly moisturize your skin. Avoid heavy moisturizers that feel like they weigh down your skin. Instead, you can purchase a light moisturizing lotion that is runny when it comes out of the bottle, not thick. When you moisturize, you can support health-looking skin.

    Always Wear Sunscreen

Overexposure to the sun can lead to hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and sunburn. Without proper protection, your skin can prematurely age and lose its luster. Because of this, it is extremely important to wear sunscreen during the summertime. Sunscreen works to create a protective barrier on top of the skin that absorbs and reflects the sun’s UV radiation. Sunscreen comes in the form of lotion, gel, foam, spray, powders, and any other type of topical product. UV protection can even be added to makeup, clothing, sunglasses, hats, and umbrellas. A good sunscreen should be at least SPF 30. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, which tells you what amount of solar energy would be needed to burn the skin. As the SPF value increases, the level of sunburn protection also increases. Applying sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays will go a long way to support healthy-looking skin.

    Find Shade

You can further protect your skin from the sun by spending more time in the shade. While getting sunlight is important for hormone production and absorbing vitamin D, your skin can only handle so much sun exposure. Spending more time in the shade will still allow you to be outside while giving your skin a rest. You will also support the health of your hair by protecting it from potential sun damage. The sun can make your hair brittle, lighten the color, and even burn your scalp. You won’t have to worry about these as much when you are in a cool, shady area. The shade gives your body the perfect opportunity to rest and rehydrate, so make sure to bring a refreshing drink with you too.

    Drink Plenty of Water

It is much easier to become dehydrated during the summer. When you are dehydrated, your skin will lack luster and elasticity, and it can even disrupt the pH balance of your skin. Make sure you are drinking enough water every day, not only for your skin’s health but for your overall health. Dehydration can also cause pain, fatigue, and the inability to concentrate or focus. When you drink enough water, your body can operate and function at its best. Drinking water will hydrate your skin and help it feel and look healthier. When your skin is properly hydrated and moisturized, you will be less likely to develop acne and blemishes. Adequate hydration will also help optimize your skin’s elasticity. Drinking enough water is also extremely important for your body to regularly flush out toxins. Harmful toxins residing in your body can impact your skin and take a toll on your health. Try to keep track of how much water you drink every day and use a refillable water bottle when possible.

The summer sun can dehydrate your skin, and harmful UV rays can cause damage over time. Protect yourself and support the health of your skin with these simple skin care tips for the summer.
