Neurological disorders affect the central and peripheral nervous systems. The brain, spinal cord, and nerves are in these systems. These parts work together to control the workings of the body.

Do you want to know what are the most common neurological disorders in the U.S? We have you covered. We’ll tell you everything you need to know about these disorders and how they are treated.

    Table of Contents

    Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that slowly causes cells in the brain to die. It destroys memory and thinking skills. It even affects a person’s ability to complete tasks like bathing and dressing.

This is one of the most common neurological diseases in the U. S. Almost 6 million Americans are living with this terrible disease.

There’s no cure for this disease. Treatment focuses on the use of drugs to reduce the severity of symptoms. It also focuses on providing support to the patient.

    Epilepsy

Epilepsy causes seizures as a result of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Seizures can occur when neurons send out the wrong signals. This can cause the person to experience unusual sensations and loss of awareness.

An illness or brain injury can cause epilepsy. Abnormal brain development before birth can also cause this neurological disorder. In most cases, the cause is not known.

Anti-seizure medications are prescribed to help patients become seizure-free. Some patients are treated with a combination of medications to reduce the severity and number of seizures.

If medications fail to control the seizures, surgery may be an option. Epilepsy surgery can be performed to remove the part of the brain that’s causing the seizures.

Therapies offer an alternative to surgery. Deep brain stimulation is a therapy that involves placing electrodes in the brain. It’s connected to a generator that sends an electrical pulse to the brain to reduce the frequency of seizures.

    Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease causes shaking and stiffness. It also causes the patient to have trouble walking and keeping their balance. It can start as a tremor in one hand, but then the other symptoms develop.

Men are more likely to get this disease. Age is a factor as most people develop Parkinson’s disease at age 60.

This disease doesn’t have a cure. Drugs help to increase the level of dopamine in the brain. The patient is also prescribed drugs to control the nonmotor symptoms.

    Stroke

A stroke occurs when there is a blockage of blood supply to the brain. This can result from a blood vessel rupture.

Strokes are the leading cause of disability in the U. S. It’s a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. Within three hours of a stroke, the patient will need an IV injection.

Because neurological diseases affect 1 in 6 people, it’s important to provide funds to organizations that seek to learn more about these disorders. National Brain Appeal is one organization that raises funding for this purpose.
