We all hear about the Internet of Things (IoT) and we know it has something to do with smart devices, but that doesn’t mean we know how it works. IoT devices are used to help us carry out simple tasks with less friction including turning the lights on and monitoring energy usage. These devices are typically controlled through an app utilizing cloud technology. Devices all communicate together through Bluetooth or Wireless networks, which let them work in unison. Throughout this article, we will tell you what the five key components of IoT devices are.

    Table of Contents

    • User Interface
    • Sensors
    • The Cloud
    • Gateways
    • Analytics

    User Interface

The majority of IoT interaction takes place behind the scenes, but it needs to be actioned from somewhere. The user interface (UI), is the part of the system that users get to see. Devices are connected to a central hub, usually on a mobile app, which is then used to control the entire system from anywhere. Creating a friction-less UI is essential in today’s market, especially when everyone has access to a mobile phone and smart tech.

    Sensors

Sensors and smart devices are at the heart of IoT, and they’re constantly at work collecting data to improve functionality. When you break down the engineering, you will find microcontroller ICs, which are essentially full computers within a chip that can be mounted onto a circuit board. As well as this, you will find semiconductor tech, which is used to create microsensors. The most common sensors in IoT devices include:

    • RFID tags.
    • Pressure sensors.
    • Moisture sensors.
    • Temperature and thermostats.
    • Proximity detection.
    • Light intensity detection.

    The Cloud

IoT devices deal with enormous amounts of data, which need to be managed somehow. To do this, cloud servers are used to provide real-time information and actions. The IoT acts as a highly-powered string of optimized servers that are tuned to manage devices in their billions. Information that passes through the servers is used by companies to improve functionality and provide a better service to end-users.

    Gateways

Gateways in IoT devices are responsible for managing the flow of traffic between various networks and protocols. They are essential for allowing devices to be interoperable, which is one of the most demanded features of smart devices. IoT gateways are extremely secure because they encrypt data transferred within the system. However, you must still take measures to set strong passwords for your network; cybercriminals are constantly on the lookout for vulnerabilities.

    Analytics

In IoT, analytics refers to the process of taking analog data and translating it into useful information. Without analytics, IoT devices wouldn’t be able to operate, which would impact the way many homes and businesses operate in 2022. Thanks to analytics, engineers can find errors quickly and address them before any serious friction is caused.

IoT devices are used to control features around the home including lighting and heating, which can help to reduce energy costs. They are all linked through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and rely on a central app for instructions. Behind the user side of IoT, analytics and cloud storage are used to deal with the billion data points sent through the various servers.
