What once was more science fiction today became a part of our daily lives. IoT and VR combine hardware and software that help many industries increase productivity and profits. Education also has not gone unnoticed.

Many educational organizations and universities have already implemented these technologies, which proved beneficial for teachers and students.

With all the diversity VR and IoT offer, how exactly do they change how we learn today?

So What Is the Internet of Things?

To put it more simply, the Internet of Things is a network for different devices. These devices may include computers, phones, TVs, a fridge, and even a pen.

People say laziness is the driver of progress, so the emergence of such technology was a matter of time.

If you’re asking about the relevance of the Internet of Things in education, you’re also asking about the relevance of the Internet of Things in general. The areas of IoT application are omnipresent and have a long history: we started to build a lot of networked things into our systems a long time ago, but they were isolated all the time and a bit technical, like in cars or airplanes.

With the advance in technology, everything has become easier.

    IoT Technology in Education

The Internet of Things could revolutionize many areas. Education is one of them. It personalizes educational materials, uses surveillance and monitoring systems for classes and exams, and provides a safe environment in schools and universities with surveillance cameras and trackers.

The “smart” education system is partly implemented in many countries: it allows students to participate in developing specific disciplines.

The following technologies are widely used in the universities of Australia and the USA:

    • Artificial intelligence systems that provide recommendations and individual growth patterns.
    • Electronic bracelets for controlling attendance and receiving individual assignments.
    • Smart desks with touchscreen for collaborative work.
    • Electronic whiteboards.
    • Virtual classrooms.
    • Electronic diaries.
    • Cameras in classrooms were broadcasting lectures online.
    • Robots.

A case in point could be John Curtin University in Australia. They use the Internet of Things on their campus. The software collects data on classroom and library occupancy, as well as course attendance and the daily lives of students and faculty.

This data helps make the right decisions about the educational process.

IoT is the Second Hand for Different Specialists

This is especially apparent in medical industries, where IoT helps health professionals to grapple with a huge amount of data and diagnose faster.

According to Market Research Engine, by 2025, the Internet of Medical Things market will reach $188 billion. IoMT is an infrastructure of smart devices, software, and individual smart services that collect more information about the patient, diagnose diseases more effectively, prevent exacerbations of chronic diseases, and provide assistance remotely.

Smart devices often refer to sensors that collect and process health indicators, allergic reactions, and test results. The sensors can be wearable or implantable, and all the data they collect are usually sent to remote storage systems, such as the cloud. As a result, the attending physician sees the patient’s statistics and can monitor their condition in real time.

    Virtual Reality

Applications of virtual reality and 360-degree multimedia are a hotbed for educational purposes.

Today VR changes business while technologies open up many new doors since virtual reality glasses can be used to transmit knowledge in a whole new way.

    Immersive Learning

Imagine being in elementary school again and learning something about Ancient Egypt. Wouldn’t that be much more fascinating to suddenly stand in the middle of the pyramids and learn directly from an ancient builder about how the pyramids were created?

Even though it may sound a bit like science fiction, such applications are widely used thanks to virtual reality! VR goggles offer almost unlimited possibilities to take us to different places or immerse ourselves in different situations.

This makes VR an exciting tool for schools and for learning and professional development to learn better.

    Situational Learning

Confucius once said: “Tell me, and I forget; teach me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I learn.”

More and more companies are using VR to involve employees in training. This technology is particularly suitable here because training courses can be offered regardless of the location where employees encounter different scenarios. This can be raising awareness of emergencies and learning how to manage things or processes.

The process can be repeated as often as needed, so there is huge potential for cost savings in the long run.

An avid example could be police officers’ training. While the training environment takes place in an empty room, police officers use VR headsets where they see a scene of a crime. The graphics are similar to a video game, but they have a realistic motion sequence thanks to VR technology.

Just like in real-world scenarios, police officers shout commands to each other, orient each other indoors, or warn each other of possible dangers.

As you can see, VR and IoT technologies are a huge leap in developing skills and learning. It is changing the process of evaluating and recording achievements, and people can control the trajectory of their intellectual development more easily.

    A Quick Overview

Over the past few years, technology has transformed various aspects of our lives, including education. With the rapid development of new technologies, traditional learning methods are being replaced by innovative and advanced tools that make education more accessible, efficient, and personalized.

One of the technologies that are set to revolutionize how we learn is Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI-powered learning platforms use algorithms to analyze individual students’ data, predict their learning patterns, and provide personalized content that caters to their unique needs. Additionally, virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) technology offers immersive and engaging experiences that can enhance learning outcomes. For example, students can take virtual field trips, perform virtual experiments, and engage in interactive simulations, all from the comfort of their classroom.

Another technology that is rapidly changing education is mobile learning. The proliferation of smartphones and tablets has enabled learners to access educational content anywhere and anytime. Moreover, social media platforms have become a valuable resource for educators and learners to collaborate, share ideas, and engage in discussion.

Lastly, blockchain technology is transforming how we verify and track academic credentials, making it easier for students to share and verify their educational achievements. This technology ensures that credentials cannot be tampered with or misrepresented, providing greater transparency and trust in the educational system.
