High ankle sprains are sprain that affects the ligaments above the ankle joint. These ligaments connect the lower leg bones. Alamo Heights high ankle sprain or syndesmotic sprain can be very painful and take a long time to heal.

It often occurs when the foot is rolled inwards (inverted), causing the ligaments to overstretch or tear. This can happen when landing from a jump or when making a sudden change in direction while running. It can also occur due to a direct blow to the outside of the ankle.

    • Below find the indicative signs of a high ankle sprain:
      • Mild pain with a full range of motion
      • Tenderness and pain with a limited range of motion
      • Severe pain and swelling with an inability to put any weight on the foot

    Diagnosis and treatment

When your doctor suspects you have a high ankle sprain, the doctor will ask about your symptoms and how the injury occurred. The specialist will also conduct a physical examination to check for pain and tenderness along the outside of the ankle. Your doctor may also order imaging tests such as an X-ray or MRI to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment for a high ankle sprain will depend on the grade of the sprain. Grade 1 and 2 high ankle sprains can be treated with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). Your doctor may also recommend over-the-counter or prescription pain medication to help relieve pain and swelling. Physical therapy may also help you regain your range of motion and strength. Grade 3 ankle sprains usually require surgery to repair the ligaments. After surgery, you will need to wear a splint or cast for several weeks, followed by physical therapy.

    Recovery

The recovery time for a high ankle sprain can vary depending on the grade of the sprain. Grade 1 and 2 sprains typically take 4-6 weeks to heal, while grade 3 sprains can take 8-12 weeks. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions and not return to activity too soon, as this could delay healing or lead to re-injury.

Below find the indicative signs of a high ankle sprain:

Mild pain with a full range of motion

When you experience mild pain in the ankle with a full range of motion, this is a sign that you might have suffered from a Grade 1 high ankle sprain. It also means that the damage to your ligaments is not severe.

Tenderness and pain with a limited range of motion

If you experience tenderness and pain around the ankle with a limited range of motion, you have suffered from a Grade 2 high ankle sprain. The ligaments might be partially torn, and movement will be restricted.

Severe pain and swelling with an inability to put any weight on the foot

If you cannot put any weight on your foot due to severe pain and swelling, you will likely suffer from a Grade 3 high ankle sprain. This is the most serious type of sprain and usually requires surgery to repair the ligaments.

If you think you have a high ankle sprain, it is important to see your doctor at Sports Medicine Associates so that they can properly diagnose and treat the injury. Treatment will vary depending on the severity of the sprain, but early intervention is key to a successful recovery.
