Resolved: Netgear WiFi Extender Can’t Detect 5 GHz WiFi Band

    1. Change the Location of Your Extender

Check your Netgear WiFi range extender’s placement. On the off chance if it is placed closer to electronic gadgets such as baby monitors, cordless phones, aluminum studs, microwaves, refrigerators, Bluetooth speakers, and treadmills, then you may come across intermittent WiFi connection issue. Therefore, keep your Netgear wireless extender away from such devices.

Apart from electronic gadgets, reflexive surfaces, metal objects, and water resources also create interference in the path of WiFi signals coming from your Netgear range extender. So, maintain a certain distance between your extender and metal doors, aluminum studs, mirrors, glasses, and fish tanks.

If possible, place your Netgear extender and the home router in the same room. So, place your extender accordingly as improper placement may also lead you to mywifiext login issues.

Change the Location of Your Extender

    2. Check If Your Client Device Supports the 5 GHz Band

Chances are that your PC or computer doesn’t support the 5 GHz band due to which you are not able to connect to your extender’s 5 GHz network. In the event that you own a Windows PC, then follow the below-given steps to check if it supports the 5 GHz band:

    • Click on the Start button.
    • In the search bar, type cmd and hit Enter.
    • The command prompt will open.
    • Type ‘netsh wlan slow drivers’ and search for the supported Radio types.
    • In case your WiFi adapter goes up to 802.11ac or 802.11ax, it means that it supports the 5 GHz radio band.
    • There is a chance that an older device gets stuck on 802.11n and in most cases, this doesn’t mean that it supports both the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz band. However, there are also some wireless chips that despite being 802.11n-certified only support the 2.4 GHz band.

    3. Check If the 5 GHz Band is Enabled

Just in case you are sure that your client device is compatible with the 5 GHz band but still you are facing the same issue, then be sure that the 5 GHz network of your Netgear extender is enabled. To check this, do the following:

    • Open your preferred web browser on a PC or computer.
    • Type 192.168.1.250 in the address bar and press the Enter key.
    • The Netgear extender login window will come into view.
    • Insert the user ID and passphrase into the given fields and click on the Log In button.
    • After logging in, click on the Wireless section.
    • Check if the 5 GHz band of your Netgear range extender is turned on.

    4. Reset Your Netgear Extender

Last but not the least, reset your Netgear WiFi range extender to the default factory settings and try connecting to the 5 GHz WiFi band again. In order to reset your Netgear extender, all you need to do is:

    • Turn on your Netgear wireless extender.
    • Press and hold the Reset button on it using a paper clip or another pointed object.
    • Wait until your extender reboots.

Done! Now, connect your devices to the extended SSID, i.e. Netgear_ext and see if the issue is now resolved.
