Anxiety is a feeling similar to fear and often has similar physical symptoms: the heart beats at an increased rate, there is difficulty breathing, sweating in the hands or other areas of the body, the muscles contract, etc. Sometimes during anxiety, there is also a feeling of numbness and dullness, a kind of detachment feeling called in professional language “Dissociation”. In this situation, the person who feels the anxiety feels disconnected from the environment and sometimes also from himself, feels that he is not himself.
The physical symptoms of anxiety can be very powerful and people who are experiencing it for the first time is extremely frightened and sometimes even come to the emergency room at the hospital because they are swayed they are about to have a heart attack (as there are some similarities between the symptoms). Only after the medical examination do they calm down. But then begins an inner journey of discovering the sources of anxiety and treating it.
How to Overcome – Healthy and Effective Ways to Deal with Anxiety
Locating the sources of anxiety – like an archaeologist digging in the ground in order to find the ancient discovery, so it is advisable to look for and identify those events from the past that caused the appearance of anxiety. Once these events are identified, the emotional burdens we carry within us in relation to those events must be neutralized.
Sometimes these are specific events that we remember and are aware of. For example, I am aware that since I was drowning in a pool at the age of 12, I have been scared to swim and scared of anything to do with water bodies and diving.
Most of the time, these are ongoing events and not one-off events. Such as fear of exams, students feel very anxious during the exams to score more or at least passing the exam. The burden of scoring more to take admission in a big college is also a reason students feel tensed and anxious.
In such a situation, there is no need to deal with each and every one of the traumatic events (in the above example, every time I heard about the exams), a certain number of events will be cleared up, to create an effect of inclusion. Another main reason that people get anxious is heartbreak. In India, teenagers take heartbreak too seriously that they lose confidence and feel anxious.
EFT technique
One of the most recommended treatments, which cleans the emotional charges from the root, is the treatment with the EFT technique (an acronym for Emotional Freedom Technique), which is wonderfully adapted to treat anxiety.
A very effective way that does not get enough recognition is to make room for emotions. This may sound illogical to you, you think there is no point because then it is certain that anxiety will take over you, but have you ever tried it?
We must not immediately start with anxiety, as it is a feeling that is difficult to bear; however, it is possible to give ourselves legitimacy and permission to feel sadness, joy, anger, fear, disappointment, enthusiasm, and everything we feel and most importantly the power to accept the situation.
