As is the case for a lot of MMORPGs, there’s always a necessity to ask whether or not that specific game is still worth playing for a certain year, and this is the case for Elder Scrolls Online. It’s hard to believe that ESO has been standing for seven long years at this point. With a lot of major changes in gameplay and tweaks made during the development cycle such as adding quests that reward ESO gold and ESO items to players since its release, Elder Scrolls Online has had quite a history. The first steps weren’t exactly celebratory, on the contrary, ESO received lukewarm reviews from the critics. ZeniMax Studios had to put in a lot of work if they wanted Elder Scrolls Online to still be present for the years to come. After about five years or so, their hard work finally paid off and they were able to taste the fruits of their success. This begs the question for potential players though: is the game friendly to beginners? Is it still worth playing when pitted against other popular MMORPGs?

    The Elder Scrolls Online Plus

For the players wondering if they’ll get the same treatment as they would in other subscription-based games such as World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls Online similarly follows that path, albeit with a few adjustments. For starters, players who purchase Elder Scrolls Online will receive the base game only. Meaning, they’ll have to purchase the rest of the other expansions that came after it. For gamers who play online for money, this isn’t always feasible. Especially when you factor in the cost to buy Twitch followers and boost their channel.

Now, don’t be bummed by this – the base game is quite meaty in itself and since it now comes with the Tamriel expansion right off the bat, players are looking at about 200 or more hours worth of content just from there alone. This is more than enough for the players who are just going to try and see if they’re willing to invest their time in the game or not; there are already loads of quests where they can get a bunch of ESO gold and ESO items to make their character stronger.

For the people who have not purchased the latest edition of Elder Scrolls Online, there will be areas around the map that will be locked to them. This goes the same for certain quest lines, accessories, DLCs, and mounts. Players will have to purchase all of them individually if they see a reason to get them. It’s quite a pain to buy everything one by one, which is why most players tend to opt for the ESO Plus instead. The ESO Plus is a subscription-based model that lets players access all of the content and features temporarily. So long as they pay their subscription every month, they would instantly get all of the current and future content updates planned for Elder Scrolls Online. Another benefit of the ESO Plus subscription is that it offers players a craft bag which broadens their inventory space and makes trading a heck of a lot easier to do.

Boring At First, But it Gets Better

The tutorial-like campaign missions aren’t much, to be honest. The environment looked too dense and the graphics look quite outdated when compared to other MMORPG titles. It’s as if the developers were trying to fit too much into a small area where the new players start their journey. What’s more, the user interface isn’t exactly beginner-friendly. There was so much stuff including all sorts of tutorial messages and screens that it came to the point where everything was just plain overwhelming. While it’s handy to know what each of the options and features is meant for in the game, being bombarded with blocks of text is not the right way to get new players excited for ESO.

That being said, everything gets miles better after that fiasco. After doing the tutorial campaign, the quests begin to be more impressive. The main quests are a way to truly take in the captivating story and the side quests are great time-sinkers that are also entertaining. Quests are the heart and soul of every MMORPG – if they’re not fun, then what’s the point of playing it? Thankfully, the stories being told in Elder Scrolls Online are more than enough to keep playing coming back time and time again.

    Final Thoughts

Elder Scrolls Online might look like it’s going to be utter garbage at first because of how the game handles its tutorial, but trust us when we say that the content is going to get better. There are so many quests that give ESO gold and ESO items to do. Plus the fact that new content will always come every year in the form of expansions, the ESO Plus subscription is a great deal for people who want to have all of the features without paying a hefty price tag. It’s worth noting that the expansions do have to be purchased separately though – there’s no way around that. That being said, ESO is perfect for RPG and MMO fans out there who love games such as Skyrim. Thankfully, the base game usually goes on sale for dirt cheap, so it’s worth at least trying to see if they’ll like it. What do you think about Elder Scrolls Online? Do you think it’s still worth playing in 2021? Let us know down below.
