How many times have you walked into the store and seen a product with the label Made in New Zealand? There’s been several times, right? But do you actually know why it’s so important to buy these products? In this article we will explain why it’s so important to buy made in New Zealand products, to help you make smarter purchasing decisions when it comes to your everyday life.
Invest in the local economy
Here in New Zealand, we have a lot of talented local craftspeople. Supporting small businesses means they can continue to produce high-quality products without outsourcing or resorting to mass production methods. Furthermore, because small businesses have to work harder to sell their products and services, you’ll receive better service and better product quality than from large corporations. It might seem counterintuitive, but buying from large corporations with massive advertising budgets often means that their employees are less invested in providing a good experience for customers—they may even resent your business for getting in the way of their pay check! By giving your business to local companies instead, you’re contributing directly to our economy and helping keep more money circulating among us as opposed to overseas.
Support businesses making quality products
While buying quality products made by high-quality manufacturers is always a great idea, support for local companies in your area is also important. Supporting local businesses can give your community a boost and help build relationships between local business owners and their customers. So, buy from your local businesses whenever possible. It’s not only good for you financially and emotionally, but it will make all of us stronger as consumers.
Show your pride in your heritage
By buying local, you can show your pride in your homeland and support other Kiwis. Think of it as a form of patriotic duty to buy New Zealand made products. Buying locally made goods also allows you to share in our unique Kiwi culture that contributes to making us such a unique and interesting place. If you love a product, there’s no better way to show that than by purchasing it straight from its source – right here in our beautiful country!
The world loves New Zealand made
it’s an honour to wear a $10 made in NZ t-shirt, as much as it is to wear an imported item. That’s why we should start buying more NZ made products! However, there are some other reasons that you may not have thought of. Here are just five of them: (1) Support local businesses; (2) Support ethical manufacturing processes; (3) Keep value and skills here at home; (4) Try new things; and (5) Be a part of something bigger. Let’s look at these points in more detail
Supporting local helps keep jobs in NZ
Supporting local businesses not only provides a way to keep money within our own economy, but it also helps employ Kiwis. After all, most of us would rather spend money on products made in NZ by Kiwis than on those made by foreigners. By supporting our own countrymen, we’re helping create jobs for others as well. That’s good news for everyone in our community – especially those who are unemployed or struggling to make ends meet through their current job(s). And let’s face it: The majority of us would rather support people we know personally than strangers overseas!
Minimise costs by reducing shipping distances
One of the major costs when you’re buying products from overseas is freight. The longer it takes for your order to arrive, then, and thus by extension how far it has travelled, means more fuel was used to get it there. A lot of Kiwi-made products aren’t manufactured here but in China or other Asian countries; however, since they’re so close to us (relatively speaking), most companies won’t ship them half way around the world. This means that products made in New Zealand are likely to have a lower carbon footprint than those made overseas.
Help reduce pollution & carbon emissions
Buying local goods keeps a lot of pollution out of our air and out of our water. For example, when you buy from a small business, you can be sure that most or all of your purchases aren’t being manufactured in another country using non-renewable resources that produce tons of carbon emissions for every item shipped to New Zealand (like groceries). And, since many Kiwi businesses are locally owned, those earnings stay here and contribute to more jobs!
Product quality and safety standards must be high
If a product is going to make it onto a store shelf in NZ, it must be of a certain quality. There are no shortcuts here. Importing products from overseas often involves cutting corners and ignoring higher safety standards and procedures, so when you choose to buy an imported product, you can’t always know what you’re getting. Why put your health on the line? Choose only products made in NZ that have passed stringent quality tests.
