While many confuse dentists with oral surgeons, the main difference is usually based on the services and areas they address. A general dentist typically deals with dental issues based on minor oral procedures like extraction and implants. However, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon possesses more training and experience to deal with certain issues that your general dentist cannot. Generally, oral surgeons are certified dental specialists who can perform minor and invasive procedures in your mouth, face, and jaw. For this reason, Dr. John Freeman, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, noted the common reasons you should consider visiting an oral surgeon.

    Table of Contents

    Toggle
    • 1.     Complex tooth extraction
    • 2.     Bite problems
    • 3.     Severe Jaw pain
    • 4.     Dental implant placement
    • 5.     Sleep apnea treatments
    • 6.     Accidental injuries
    • 7.     Deformities

    1.     Complex tooth extraction

Not all dental extraction is typically simple since some are out of hand for general dental practitioners. Although a dentist can handle simple tooth extractions, there are severe cases that require the need for invasive surgical treatment. If your case includes severe pain from tooth impaction, bleeding gums, hard-to-reach teeth, severe decay, cavities below your gum line, and misaligned teeth, you should visit an oral surgeon instantly.

    2.     Bite problems

While orthodontic treatments can successfully address overbite, underbite, and open bites, severe cases may require professional help. Furthermore, if your bite has a significant issue, your orthodontist may refer you to an oral surgeon for further treatment. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons help align your bite regardless of your situation.

    3.     Severe Jaw pain

Jaw pain can arise from many issues, including temporomandibular joint TMJ disorder. Also, when in severe forms, your dentist may be unable to address your situation. However, an oral surgeon can help identify the root cause of your jaw pain and tailor you with a customized minimally invasive treatment for your relief. If your pain is caused by bruxism or an undiagnosed fracture, the oral surgeon can offer treatments and aftercare tips to eradicate your pain.

    4.     Dental implant placement

While your dentist can place dental implants without difficulties, you may want to see an oral surgeon instead. Because of their advancement in education and training, oral surgeons can perform the procedure successfully without leaving any deformity behind. This provides you with a positive experience and allows you to enjoy your outcomes in the long run.

    5.     Sleep apnea treatments

Sleep apnea is a health issue affecting your oral and overall wellness. Obstructive sleep apnea is a fatal health issue often characterized by repeated breathing pauses at night. If your sleep apnea affects your oral health, your dentist can refer you to an oral surgeon for further checkups and treatments.

    6.     Accidental injuries

While we try to avoid injuries or accidents, emergencies are meant to happen. If you or your loved ones engage in an accident that severely affects your facial structure, an oral surgeon can help alleviate your condition. Mostly, these experts are best suited to reclaim your facial structure in case of severe injuries.

    7.     Deformities

Anyone can have an oral deformity that is either genetic or generated down the road. However, if your dentist can’t address your deformities effectively, you can schedule an appointment with an oral surgeon.

Even though the general dentist plays a crucial role in maintaining your smile, you shouldn’t overlook the growing importance of oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Moreover, oral surgeries are comfortable and painless as the procedures involve a local anesthetic. Furthermore, each treatment session is specifically tailored to your unique needs, which means the results are appealing and promising.
