Maintaining the good working order of your plumbing will not only save you money on expensive repairs or replacements. It can also help prevent water wastage that can reach thousands of dollars in cost. Besides investing in a professional plumbing service, you must also pay attention to the proper use and maintenance of your system. Focusing on increasing your plumbing performance and lifespan will save you money in the long run. Check out these 5 money-saving plumbing habits for your home:

    • Turn off the faucet properly
    • Fix water leaks as they occur
    • Use water-saving devices
    • Insulate your pipes
    • Don’t throw everything down your drain

    Turn off the faucet properly

A faucet that is not properly turned off after use can waste gallons of water a day. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year. To save water and money at home, make a conscious effort to turn off your taps all the way. If the drip continues, it is high time to call for a plumbing repair or replacement.

Fix water leaks as they occur

Plumbing leaks are usually the reason behind a skyrocketing water bill. EPA estimates that you can waste 10,000 gallons of water every year if you ignore plumbing leaks in your home. Prevent a minor leak problem from escalating and turning into a full-blown plumbing emergency by fixing it right away. Make it a weekly habit to go around your residential property and look for a potential leak problem.

    Use water-saving devices

One simple yet effective way to conserve more water in your home is to install water-saving devices. Using a low-flow faucet aerator will help you save more than 500 gallons of water per year. Other water-saving devices worth installing in your home include low-flow showerheads, dual flush toilet converters, and rainfall shutoff devices.

    Insulate your pipes

If you live in a cold climate, you should make it part of your plumbing care and maintenance to insulate your water pipes. This will avoid frozen pipes, which can lead to serious water leaks as the pipe expands and bursts open. Applying foam insulation to your pipes will prevent them from freezing during cold weather.

Don’t throw everything down your drain

Clogged drains can cause big plumbing problems, such as leaks, sewage backup, and flooding. To prevent it from happening in the first place, avoid throwing everything down your drain. Food items like bones, pasta, coffee, fruits, and vegetables, should go to the trash bin.

To learn more about how you can save water and money at home, do not hesitate to talk to your trusted local plumber. Working with the pros will ensure unlimited water use in your home without the high costs. Partner with a professional plumbing company today!
