Just follow your nose
Bad smells are often noticeable as soon as you enter the apartment. Follow the smell and try to identify it as much as possible. A foul smell could originate from spoiled food, for example. Sewage pipes can also be to blame, which is particularly likely if the smell has been noticed over a longer period of time. Musty odors often settle in textiles: carpets, curtains, covers and laundry attract odors of all kinds.
No chance for bad smells
Many sources of bad odors are easily controllable and can be avoided from the start. The refrigerator, pantry, and any other places you store food should be checked frequently for spoiled food. Maybe something slipped into a hard-to-see corner. Food with a strong smell can be stored in sealed containers. The trash can should also have a lid. Don’t choose an overly large bucket for your organic waste. The more often you have to empty it, the less biowaste can rot. Wash your textiles regularly, not just your bed linen, there are various cleaning agents for upholstery and carpets that clean the fabric well and can then be vacuumed.
Chemical room air fresheners
Chemical room air fresheners should provide a quick remedy. Advertising then promises fresh, clean air, but unpleasant odors are often only masked and also worsen the living situation. Harmful substances have been found in many room air fresheners. They also cause fatigue, headaches and nausea in many people. Use natural room air fresheners instead. A few cloves in a lemon or orange provide a fresh scent without burdening the room with pollutants.
Traditional office remedies
There are some office remedies that, unlike air fresheners, actually bind and remove odors. Vinegar can be used to remove many odors from a wide variety of surfaces. If you set up a container with vinegar and water in a ratio of 1:2, the odors are drawn out of the room air and bound in the vinegar-water mixture. Vinegar is also a very effective way of cleaning surfaces like refrigerator shelves. Since vinegar itself has an intense smell, it must be well ventilated afterwards. If you are bothered by the vinegar smell, you can also use lemon juice for cleaning. Another tried and tested office remedy is old coffee grounds. Although no surfaces can be wiped with this, it pulls the odors out of the room air. You can remove the smell of freshly painted walls with salt.To do this, place a vessel with salt water in the renovated room. Pets also often spread unpleasant odors. In this case, baking soda has proven its worth. If you put a little baking soda on baskets or the litter box, the odor will be gone by rinsing. This also works particularly well with dishes, dishwashers and musty shoes.
If nothing helps
If, despite all these tips, the annoying smell doesn’t go away, the suspicion arises that either mold in the apartment is causing the stench or there are shut-down sewage pipes in the apartment. These would have to be sealed with lids. Drains should be flushed regularly. You can also add a few drops of citrus oil for a fresh scent. If the odor keeps reappearing, there could be a defect in the ventilation of the sewage system. This defect must be remedied by the owner. If you do have a problem with mold, contact a professional who will be able to show you various options for mold remediation.
