As an entrepreneur or business owner, you’ll know that your team is integral to your success. Surrounding yourself with the right people and keeping them on board is one of the most important aspects of your work. This includes the IT department and your IT manager. Often relegated to the back of the office or the basement, it can be easy to overlook this team of dedicated professionals slaving away with code and wires. But their happiness is just as important as everyone elses! If you’ve been guilty of neglecting your companies IT needs, here are some tips for getting back on track.

Ask him what his department needs

When was the last time you checked in with the IT guy to see how he’s getting on? Maybe he is short-staffed or struggling with the budget. Perhaps a key system or hardware needs an upgrade. Or maybe he just needs to talk through the way things are working. Often, the IT department can get left out of many discussions and the lines of communications can be limited.

But don’t forget that this department is responsible for making sure your company is working properly. If anything goes wrong, they are the ones that have the power to fix it, including situations like downtime, security problems, or network issues. Keeping them and the IT manager happy is integral to your company running without a hitch. If they need new plugins and software, do it. If hardware is getting old, upgrade it. And if they need a few more staff to evenly spread the work, consider making it happen.

Give him tools to make his life easier

As mentioned above, the IT manager and his team have a huge responsibility on their shoulders. Every issue or second of downtime can result in lost revenue and clients for you. Therefore it makes sense and it’s a wise investment to provide the tools that can make their life easier. For example, SIEM software is a great option as it allows security log and event management all on one dashboard. It’s helpful to check out the best open-source SIEM Software 2021 to see some of the most highly rated options and compare them side by side.

Other options include SysDev software and systems, a proper CRM, and project management tools that can help streamline workflow in a manageable way. All of these tools can be brought in at reasonable prices and can make a significant difference to your IT team and the happiness of the IT manager!

    Focus on his professional development

One way to get the best out of your team, and to be a great employer is by supporting professional development. You might think that investing in their learning could result in them moving on, but often this isn’t the case. While you might have a few leave along the way, the ones that stay will work harder and with more passion for you.

Investing in training, education, and certifications for your IT team and the manager means you will get more out of them. They will be better at the job, bring more skills to work, and be more efficient in everything they do. Furthermore, they will feel appreciated by you and will be more likely to remain loyal and hardworking!
