Did you know that 30-50% of water is lost due to aging infrastructure? For major water networks and utilities, this accounts for a significant portion of undetected water loss. For water service suppliers, lost water equates to lost revenue. So, how can water loss be managed, avoided and event prevented? Successful water leak detection.

Water is generally lost through leaks, cracks and holes in pipes and fittings. As most infrastructure is underground, the successful detection of these leaks is near impossible through visual inspection until the water has reached the surface. Leak detection requires a specialized range of solutions and methods to determine the exact location of the leak, to successful prevent water loss. Let’s break down the top three water leak detection solutions and methods that have proven to be successful for major networks and utilities:

      • Pressure Differences
      • Thermal Imaging

    Acoustic Sensors

Acoustic sensors are used to accurately detect leaks in major water networks. Industry leading acoustic technology is at the forefront of modern leak detection. For example, Australia’s Aqua Analytics active leak detection services rely on industry leading equipment, that includes leak noise correlators, ground microphones and acoustic leak detection and devices successfully identify leaks and detect the leak’s location.

Technology such as acoustic devices is the major solution for water leak detection in utilities. As leaks in transmission pipes continues to be a major water loss threat, advanced technology provides a solution to minimise network damage and prevent extensive, ongoing leaks.

    Pressure Differences

Pressure differences offer a secondary leak detection method; measured by strategically placed flow meters and pressure gauges. These measurements allow for a technician to identify differences in pressure readings that are almost certainly caused by leaks or cracks in pipes.

    Thermal Imaging

This leak detection method uses thermal cameras to easily identify and locate problem areas in utility lines. Thermal imaging can pick up on moisture issues, cracks in pipes and sources of leaks. Though more commonly used in residential leak detection projects, thermal imaging is one method of success leak identification and will pick up on moisture, condensation, and cracks based on subtle temperature differences, revealing the presence of water leaks.
