Introduction to NGNL
No Game No Life is an anime series adapted from the Japanese light novel of the same name. Written by one of the most popular Japanese Brazilian writers Yū Kamiya, the novel gained popularity from its very first episode in 2012, published under the MF Bunko j Imprint publications.
However, people wanted more, so the writer decided to start the anime series of the same novel. Yet, the anime wasn’t its first adaptation; right after one year of its light novel release, in 2013, the author and his wife started publishing the manga adaptation of the series under Monthly Alive Comic.
After the manga version of the series bloomed, the Madhouse announced that there will be an anime adaptation of the series, which premiered on AT-X in 2014. Further proceeding after attaining the license from Seven Seas Entertainment, the NGNL franchise came up with a number of other adaptations, including the film “No Game No Life: Zero”, and the spinoff series “No Game No Life, Please!”.
However, here we are talking about the original series that premiered in 2014. It was licensed by Hanabee, Sentai Filmworks, Medialink, and MVM Films and made under the direction of Atsuko Ishizuka, co-written again by Jukki Hanada. The series consisted of 12 episodes and ended in the same year 2014, however, the manga and light novel continued till 2018.

No Game No Life Season 1 Storyline
NGNL is a story of two siblings, Sora and Shiro, two step-siblings who don’t even give damn importance to the outside world. They are what you can call socially isolates, or precisely hikikomori, what you call in Japanese. The incident that caused this much social withdrawal in them was the death of their parents.
Both of them are die-hard lovers of the game and are known as Blank in the gaming world, one of the most difficult and undefeated groups of gamers at that time. The reason they are called blank is that they never fill out their names while playing the game and never leave the ground without winning.
But of course, that’s not just it. These brothers and sisters have become highly popular in the gaming world, and as we all know that with popularity comes jealousy, and so this happened with them too. One day, they got challenged by Tet, a god of an alternate world (Disboard), for a game of chess.
As usual and as expected, they won the game, and hence as a reward, the god offers them to live in the alternated world that revolves around games. Though they accepted the invitation, they still considered it as some silly joke.
However, their assumptions come to an end when they really find themselves in that alternate world of the game. It was later revealed to them that this world operates with completely different laws and principles, depicted as Ten Pledges.
According to these rules, No member or citizen is allowed to harm, hurt or inflict on each other, rather they have to gamble with the games to enforce themselves upon others. And that’s where the game begins. In this alternate world of the game resides sixteen species, among which the humans reside in the Land of Elkia.
As Elkia’s position is in a continuous fall due to the notorious track record of their last king, who was famous for losing every game, Shiro and Sora decide to take up the crown so that the human community can rise again once again and they can rule all the other species too.
Though in the first season, the siblings are able to conquer five of the species, however, 11 of them are still left. So their next goal is to conquer the remaining species too, and therefore they challenge Tet the God in the finale of the last season, ruling all the species. Now what’s gonna happen in the second season is yet to be discovered. Will the siblings will ever be able to rule the whole world of the game? Or will they have to face defeat by Tet? Let’s find out

No Game No Life Anime – Light Novel Distribution
As already mentioned above, the No Game No Life anime series was the adaption of the light novel. However, there is a little bit of a difference between the two, such as the arrangement of volumes, addition of characters, changes in dialogues, and a few more things like that.
No doubt, changes were necessary because otherwise, there would have been no fun in watching the anime. Therefore, while adapting the anime, the makers altered it a bit while distributing the volumes.
Though their distribution did resemble the original plot, there were some alterations. The first season of the anime was based on the first 3 books. The film No Game No Life, Please was based on the 6 volume. So it’s pretty much sure that if the makers are thinking of starting the second season project, they will continue the story from 4the volume onward.
How Many Volumes of No Game No Life Will be On Aired?
If you are a reader of Light Novels, then you may know that No Game No Life novel had 10 volumes in total, starting from 2012 till 2018. As for now, its anime adaptation has already covered 4 of its volumes, including the first 3 and the 6th one, which means that 5 volumes are still left and are yet to be aired. However, we can never be sure of exactly how many volumes the creators have decided to adopt, so we can’t make any strong assumptions. However, one can predict that the second season will continue the story of 4the volume.
The ten volumes of NGNL are:
- Volume 1: In This Fantasy World, Everything’s a Game — and These Gamer Siblings Play to Win!
- Volume 2: The Gamer Siblings Have Their Eyes on a New Target — the Land of the Animal Girls.
- Volume 3: It Seems Half of the Gamer Siblings Disappeared…?
- Volume 4: The Gamer Siblings Have Run Away From a Realistic Romance Game.

- Volume 6: It Seems the Gamer Pair Challenged the World
- Volume 7: It Seems the Gamer Siblings Established the Joseki
- Volume 8: It Seems the Gamers Progressed Past the Fuseki

Let’s clear one thing, the sequel of any broadcast program, either be it a movie, film, or series, depends upon a few aspects; the major ones include the viewer’s feedback and the profit that they made from it. It mostly happens that a show that everyone has loved fails to produce a sequel just because the profit on production wasn’t much. However, many shows still renew their stories despite being low on profit just because of the viewer’s choice. The same happened with the overlord, it didn’t create much of a profit, but the producers still created its new season just because people wanted to see it.
So if we take a look at both of these aspects of NGNL, it’s pretty obvious that its second season will be continued because it made a larger fortune than overlord and people have loved it for years. so the answer to the question “will there ever be season 2?” is of course “yes”. There is a 90% chance of its comeback. However, 10% of it is still in a grey area as we can never be sure enough of what’s going in the developers’ minds because nothing has been announced by the makers themselves yet. Moreover, what reduces the chances of season renewal is the ongoing controversy regarding its writer, who has been alleged of plagiarizing the story. However, the real source of plagiarism hasn’t been found yet. Still, the allegations have increased doubt in people’s minds, which is why it has become difficult to decide whether to release season 2 or not.
How Popular Was The No Game No Life Blu-Ray?
Approximately 8,800 copies of each disc in the first season of the No Game No Life Blu-ray were sold. That is a respectable sum. Even without the English launch of No Games No Life Blu-ray, Blu-ray sales in 2014 were reasonably strong. Few anime series sold more than 10,000 copies each disc, and most of those who did, most received a new season.
How Popular Is The Light Novel No Game No Life?
No Game No Life Volume 10 bought 165,000 copies, whereas the most recent volume, 11, only sold about 85,000. Even though it is far less than what this category used to sell, it’s still excellent for 2023. Although digital sales could be to blame for the fall, the prolonged absence is more likely to be to blame. Even still, the novels are doing well, given that there are just ten series expected to sell up to 100,000 copies in 2023.
No Game No Life Season 2: Release Date
As already mentioned, the directors haven’t announced or hinted at anything regarding the renewal of the series, so we don’t have even the slightest idea of its release date. Yet we can still assume that the second season may appear somewhere between 2021 to 2023. But again, these are just assumptions, they can be either true or false, so you shouldn’t depend upon them. However, you may hope for the best.
What can be the Possible Storyline for No Game No Life Season 2?
Though we haven’t been informed anything about the storyline of season 2 because it is not even announced yet. However, depending upon the storyline of the first season of the series and deducing from the former’s plot we can assume how it may start.
It is clear that if there will ever be a second season, it will for sure continue the story of 4 volumes of the light novel and will extend it’s end to the 7th volume based on the fact that the first season consisted of the first three volumes. Yet it’s also possible that the makers might add the next three volumes (8,9,10) in the same season or they can also set aside the remaining three volumes for 3rd season.
Source Material for No Game No Life Season 2
For the ones who are worried regarding what source material will be used for season 2, good news for them, stop being worried because there is more for NGNL season 2 than meets the eye. There are still 6 books left, meaning the makers have plenty of source material to pick from. And if you wanna know what possibly can be the second season based on, go and grab the whole ten of Its books and start reading; you’ll get the basic idea of season 2’s source material.
Cast and Characters of No Game No Life Season 2: Will the Same Members Return?
One thing that almost all the fans are curious about is: whether the No Game No Life season 2 will feature the same characters or not. Well, the answer is a bit complicated. Though the chances of a return for the same characters are quite high because all 10 books did have all the main characters in them. Yet it is still possible that the makers would want to alter the ending and the whole plot at any point. Hence they can minus the old characters or add new ones depending upon the new plot of the series, so you should always be ready for the unexpected. But as for now, it is obvious that the same old members will return in the case of season 2.
Final Verdict
So, for the fans who were waiting for the No Game No Life Season 2, they will have to wait for a bit more for updates because as of now, there hasn’t been any news or announcement regarding its release or production. But you should never lose hope and wait for the best to happen.
