Buying your home is incredibly exciting. However, it is even more exciting when you can make it your own space with your own sense of style.
Decorating, no matter which part of your home you are tackling requires you to have lots of accessories and things to hand. Some of which are obvious such as paint, but others that you may not instantly think of.
To help you work out what you need to make sure that you have when it comes to decorating your first home, here is our list of must-haves.
Overalls
Decorating can get messy, which means that you will want to make sure that you don’t get your best clothes covered in paint. Sure, you can wear older clothes that you don’t mind getting mucky, but if you want to make sure that you are as protected as possible whilst you are painting, then overalls could be the right choice.
Overalls cover your entire body, which means that you don’t have to worry about your clothes ending up covered in paint and not being able to be worn. There are many different places you can buy overalls from, and Pronto Direct is an example.
Paint Rollers and brushes
It may be somewhat more of an obvious choice, but you need to make sure that you have paint rollers and brushes to hand before you get to work decorating. Rollers will give you coverage over the entire wall without having to waste paint. Still, to get up close and personal to skirting boards and the ceiling, you will need to have a variety of paintbrushes for the job.
It is also a good idea to try and have an extension pole for your roller as this will help you cover even more area without having to get a ladder.
Masking Tape
Whilst you may be able to easily cut into certain parts of your walls with some careful paintbrush work, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes it is better to tape off the particular areas of your wall whilst you get busy with painting. This includes your sockets and your light switches too.
Sugar Soap and Cloths
You don’t want to be painting on dirty and stained walls. Not only will this be likely to leave marks behind on your walls that can’t be covered even with thick paint, but it also can make it harder to paint too.
The best thing to do before you even get to work is to wash down your walls using a mixture of sugar soap and water. Sugar soap is easy enough to mix up and use, and you can wash the walls down with a sponge or cloth.
Drop Cloths
As we have already covered, painting can be a messy business, which means that you will want to protect some of the things that are already in the room you are decorating. Carpets and furniture that is too big to move are the main things that need protecting, and a quick and straightforward way to do this is with drop cloths.
These large cloths are designed to cover a maximum amount of floor space and will ensure that even if you do drip paint, it won’t end up on places that are hard to clean.
As you can see, there are many things to think about when it comes to decorating your room. Make sure that you have all the necessary things to hand before you get started, and you will have a beautifully decorated home in no time at all.
