Braces and Invisalign are two orthodontic treatments that are commonly used to straighten teeth. Which treatment is better for you?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of malpositioned or crooked teeth. The main goal of orthodontics is to improve the appearance and function of the teeth and jaws. You should seek dental expertise from Smiles of West Point.

Both braces and Invisalign are effective at correcting tooth misalignment. However, they each have their advantages and disadvantages. Read on to find out which treatment is best for you.

    Braces

Braces are a type of appliance that is worn over your teeth while eating and sleeping. They can be made from metal (metal brackets), plastic (clear aligners) or ceramic (ceramic brackets). Metal braces are more common than clear aligners because they provide a stronger hold on your teeth.

The brace will usually consist of one upper bracket and one lower bracket connected by wire. Your orthodontist will use these wires to move your teeth into place. You may also need additional attachments such as rubber bands or elastics to keep your teeth in position.

Clear aligners are removable appliances that are similar to traditional braces. Clear aligners are made from thin layers of material that are bonded together. This creates an impression of your teeth so that they can be moved into place. Once your teeth are positioned correctly, the aligner is removed and replaced by another aligner.

Because clear aligners are removable, they are less likely to cause irritation to sensitive tissues like gums. Additionally, clear aligners do not require any permanent modification to your teeth.

However, clear aligners cannot correct all types of dental issues. For example, if you have crowding, gaps between teeth, or overlapping teeth, then braces are recommended instead.

    Invisalign

Invisalign is a series of custom-made transparent aligners that are designed to gradually move your teeth into place without causing discomfort. Unlike conventional braces, Invisalign does not cover your entire mouth. Instead, it uses a series of clear aligners that fit snugly against your teeth.

Each aligner moves your teeth slightly until they are in the right position. As you wear each aligner, the next one slides onto your teeth. When you remove each aligner, it’s replaced by another one.

Unlike clear aligners, Invisalign can treat many different types of dental problems. It can even help correct some cases of crossbite.

Invisalign has been proven to be just as effective as other forms of orthodontics. However, it is not suitable for everyone. If you have very crowded teeth or severe spacing issues, Invisalign might not work well for you.

To determine whether Invisalign is right for you, ask yourself:

Do I want to straighten my teeth quickly?

Can I tolerate wearing something on my teeth for weeks at a time?

Will I be able to follow through with regular appointments?

If you answered “yes” to all three questions, then Invisalign could be a good option for you.

    Orthodontic Treatment Costs

Most people who receive orthodontic treatment pay for themselves within two years. However, there are several factors that affect how long it takes to recoup your investment. These include:

The number of visits required to complete the process.

How much time is spent correcting your teeth.

Whether you choose to have braces or clear aligners.

How Long Does It Take To Get Results From Orthodontics?

Most patients see results after about six months of treatment. But this depends on the severity of their condition. Some people who get orthodontic treatment don’t notice any improvement until their adult teeth start growing out.

For most people, the end result looks great. However, it can take up to five years before your smile is fully formed. During this time, you should continue to brush and floss regularly.
