Home requirements for a Level 1 EV Charger vs. Level 2 EV Charger

If you’re considering buying an electric vehicle but want to ensure your home can accommodate the power of the necessary charger, you’ve come to the right place. Before purchasing an electric vehicle, it is crucial that you consider whether or not your home can sustain the charging requirements.

There are three levels of chargers: Level 1 EV Charger, Level 2 EV Charger, and Level 3, also known as a Fast Charger. Level 1 and Level 2 EV Chargers are predominantly used in homes, whereas Fast Chargers are used in businesses and common areas.

If you are planning to install an EV charger in your home, choosing a Level 1 or a Level 2 EV Charger will be most beneficial.

So what are the requirements for a Level 1 EV Charger vs. Level 2 EV Charger?

    Level 1 EV Charger Requirements:

    • A standard 120-volt outlet
    • An adapter to connect your EV to a 120-volt household outlet (this adapter is included when you purchase an EV)
    • Hours required for charging:
      • Plug-in-Hybrid: 6-8 hours
      • Battery EV: 11-16 hours

    Level 2 EV Charger Requirements:

    • A dedicated 240-volt outlet – which is a faster charger option
    • An Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) control
    • Hours required for charging:
      • Plug-in Hybrid: 3-4 hours
      • Battery EV: 6-8 hours

Many EV users choose to install a Level 2 EV Charger as it is more efficient at charging, offers more flexibility and convenience, and offers potential cost savings. If you have got an older home, you may not have a 240-volt outlet. In that case, an electrician can install one for you, or you could opt to use a Level 1 EV Charger.

If you are unsure what voltage level your home has, an electrician can calculate your home’s electric service to ensure that it is large enough to accommodate a Level 2 EV Charger. In the event that you need to upgrade, you’ll need to have an electrician perform the electrical upgrade.

There are different Level 2 EV Chargers available. Some work best indoors, and others outdoors. To save yourself time and money, it’s recommended that you talk to your electrician about which charger will work for you during their visit. They can provide you with a quote for the electrical upgrade and the charger installation.
