A quarter of all people who would like to buy a car soon are looking for a vehicle with an electric drive, according to a recent survey on behalf of the Verivox comparison portal. For the time being, petrol engines will remain the preferred type of drive in Europe. However, the data also shows that hardly anyone wants to part with their car altogether. Overall, 14.6 % of all survey participants said their next car should be electric. 7.7 % plan to buy a plug-in hybrid. Together, more than one in five would like a car that can drive purely electrically. With 37.9 %, gasoline-powered cars remain the first choice of motorists, but diesel cars are behind electric car with 12.2 %.

The mood among those surveyed who would like to buy a car in the next 12 months is even more explicit: 25 % of them want an electric drive – predominantly an electric car  (16.2%), less often a plug-in hybrid (8.8%) ). More than 1000 car owners were interviewed for the survey.

A comparison with the current registration figures shows that when it comes to electric cars, private car buyers’ intentions to buy are ahead of new registrations – in 2021, the market share will be 10.7 % so far. The situation with the plug-in hybrids differs from that of the fully electric vehicles: Their share of new registrations this year is 11.8 %. In the Verivox survey, significantly fewer private car owners were enthusiastic about plug-in hybrids: 8.8 % of people who would like to buy a car in the next 12 months want to choose one of the part-time electric vehicles.

Many survey participants have no doubts about the future of electromobility: 32.4 % believe that all fully electric cars will gain the most market share in the next ten years. This result puts electric vehicles well ahead of classic hybrid cars (16.2%) and cars with hydrogen fuel cell technology (14.4%).

People who currently stay away from buying an electric car most frequently cited the short-range as a reason in the survey (46.7%). A high purchase price (41.5%) and an insufficient number of charging stations (41.2%) are further reasons currently speaking against an electric car for the sceptics. In addition, 23.3 % said the ecological benefit was not big enough, 12.3 % said they had got used to petrol or diesel. Finally, 3.4 % simply do not consider CO2 savings.

Very few people want to do without individual mobility in the future: When asked about the plan for their next car purchase, only 4.6 % answered that they probably no longer want to buy a car.

Speaking of the autonomy of electric cars, you should know that the latest Lightyear electric car has set a record with one of its cars travelling 710 km without having to stop to recharge. It is the Lightyear One, an electric car with a sunroof that helps extend the autonomy. The journey was made at 85 km / h and lasted nine hours with an average consumption of 83 Wh / km.
