What is a Desiccant Air Dryer?

There are a few different methods to remove moisture from compressed air. There are several different kinds of air dryers:

    • Refrigerated dryers
    • Chemical dryers
    • Desiccant dryers
    • Membrane air dryers

Each uses different methods to compress and dry the air in question. Desiccant air dryers absorb water vapor molecules with the help of a desiccant material, which the compressed air is passed over. They often contain monitoring equipment to control the regeneration phase. It’s one of your best options when the air in question will be subjected to temperatures below freezing.

You have a choice with desiccant dryers as well. You can either go for a heated option or a heatless option. The heated option dries the water molecules not in use to remove moisture entirely, whereas heatless options use the dry air to remove the moisture. Heated options require steam, electricity, or gas to power, whereas heatless is less dependent on outside services.

What are the Most Common Materials Used in Air Dryers?

The desiccant is often comprised of silica. Other materials can include activated charcoal, calcium sulphate, calcium chloride, or even molecular sieves, depending on the system in question. There are various types of air dryers as well, depending entirely on your use. Regardless of which material you end up choosing, always go with a reputable provider to ensure the best quality.

Signs it’s Time to Repair or Replace Your Air Compressor or Air Dryer

There are many key signs that you will need to either repair or alternatively replace your air dryer that you must keep an eye out for. If your compressor won’t start or stop, this is a huge red flag. If you hear odd noises, if there is an issue with the circuit breaker, if it shakes, ticks, blows warm air, or you find moisture where there shouldn’t be, it’s time to investigate.

For minor issues, always try to repair, but when you are looking at multiple issues at once or an expensive fix, save yourself the hassle and instead get a new www.superdrysystems.com Desiccant air dryer instead.

How Long Do Air Dryers Last?

Proper maintenance can help keep your machine working for years, but even with proper maintenance, desiccant does have a finite lifespan. The heatless desiccant air dryers last around five years, and heat regenerated desiccant should last between two to three years, as the desiccant starts to break down. Keep an eye out for discoloration or oil contamination, as these are key signs that the desiccant has reached the end of its lifespan.
