The Catalyst 4900 family of switches are ideal for space-constrained deployments, as they are typically 1U or 2U switches. High performance and low latency can be achieved in a small form factor with the Cisco Catalyst 4900 Switches series.
Cisco 4900 Switch Overview:
The Cisco Catalyst 4900 Switch Series is a high-performance, low-latency, Layer 2 and 3 wire-speed service router available in 1 or 2-rack configurations that is excellent for deployment areas that require little space.
What Makes the Cisco Catalyst 4900 a Popular Switch Option. The reasons the Catalyst 4900 series is popular today are twofold. One set of features is lucrative for data centers, while the other is great for branch offices.
Aggregation of servers in data center characteristics. The flexibility offered in the use of links helps to support layers 2 and 3 when needed, managing the available architecture accordingly. This is probably the biggest advantage of the Cisco 4900 over all other models. Then there’s the ability to seamlessly transition from 10/100/1000 to impressive 10GB Ethernet lines. Add to the transport flexibility that supports high-performance video, compute, and storage applications with automatic edge switch provisioning and you’ve got a winner.
Cisco Catalyst 4900 switches stand as robust solutions in the networking landscape, providing a comprehensive feature set for enhanced performance and reliability. These switches, designed for data center deployments, offer advanced capabilities such as high-density 10/100/1000 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, ensuring seamless data transmission. With features like wire-speed IP forwarding, IPv6 support, and dynamic routing protocols, the Catalyst 4900 series facilitates efficient and scalable network operations. The switch’s modular design allows for flexibility in configuration, accommodating diverse network requirements. With a focus on security, QoS, and simplified management through Cisco IOS Software, the Catalyst 4900 series emerges as a versatile choice for organizations seeking robust, high-performance networking solutions.
Branches with distributed aggregation and collapsed core LAN For branch offices that demand high performance, get a maximum forwarding capacity of 320 Gbps with the ability to support 10 Gb Ethernet interfaces and a host of other connections, including multi-layer support for IPv6 and major routing protocols. Then there’s the ability to add fans, redundant power supply, and more. In fact, migration to the 10GB Ethernet connection is inexpensive with the 4900 Catalyst line. Cisco 4948E, the latest addition to the 4900 series, inherits all of these features and also offers front-to-back airflow, 10Gb Ethernet uplinks, and hardware that includes IPv6.
General Review
Since the five models available in the Cisco Catalyst 4900 Series are different from each other in their offerings, it is best to analyze each one separately and analyze their benefits. These are the 4900 Catalyst models in order of oldest first.
Cisco 4948 Switch. The 4948 switch is a fixed-configuration, low-latency, layer 2 to layer 4, wire-speed switch with a single rack unit that is excellent for rack-optimized server switching. Using the same hardware and software architecture as the previous 4500 series, the 4948 offers multi-layer aggregation, low-density reliability with exceptional performance at a greatly reduced price. It comes with a total of 48 10/100/1000 BASE-T ports and 4 alternate wired ports that can use optional 1000BASE-X SFP optics. You can use hot-swappable power supplies and a hot-swappable fan with redundant fans in a 1+1 AC or DC configuration.
Cisco Catalyst 4948 10GB Ethernet Switch. The 10GE or 4948 10GE switch is also a fixed configuration, single-rack, low-latency wire-speed switch from Layer 2 to Layer 4, excellent for switching servers using the older 4500 series architecture. Naturally, like the basic 4948 switches, it offers good multilayer aggregation, good performance, and reliable bandwidth except for larger workstations and setups. It comes with 2 ports for X2 SFP ports and 48 10/100/1000 BASE-T ports with the same optional internal power supply and fan configurations.
Cisco 4948E and 4948E-F Switch. The following model actually comes in two variants, namely 4948E and 4948E-F with a single rack unit, fixed layer 2 to layer low latency switching configuration. With the 4948 architecture and configuration, this revamped model now offers twice the uplink capacity with 4 10GB Ethernet uplinks plus direct IPv6 hardware support. Additionally, it can be configured with cooling from back to front or vice versa as required during deployment. However, the 4948E and 4948E-F continue to offer 48 10/100/1000 ports, 4 SFP ports with 1000BASE-X and SFP + optics, and internal power and fan support.
Cisco 4928 10GB Ethernet Switch Called the mid-size LAN aggregation branch switch, the Cisco 4928 10GB switch is a high-performance branch-based LAN aggregation implementation with Layer 2 to Layer 4 support that is ideal for small form factor solutions. It comes with 28 SFP ports and two 10GB X2 optical Ethernet ports, the remaining features remain the same. Some attractive features of this model include its innovative QoS and security, lower latency with layer 2-4 switching, 71 million packet rates at 48 Gbps, a hot-swappable tray for redundant fans, and configurable AC or DC power supply 1+1.
Cisco 4900M Catalyst Switch. The most advanced of all 4900 switches is the Catalyst 4900M, which is excellent for space-constrained deployments where high availability, high-speed wire-speed access performance, and modular flexibility are a must while staying in the field. 2RU small form factor. This line offers low latency, 10GB Ethernet, higher performance with top-of-the-line layer switching solutions ideal for rack-optimized servers. This model will be useful when a core distribution implementation and collapsed LAN configuration is required with some flexibility in implementation.
