A meniscus tear is a knee injury in your knee cartilage. The knee cartilage acts as a cushion between the shinbone and the thigh bone. A meniscus tear West Chester exhibits symptoms like pain or swelling at the knee, and you will need an orthopedic to evaluate the damage.

The causes and symptoms of a meniscus tear

Moving or suddenly turning your knee can cause the condition because of the sudden pressure change. If you are at rest and you move your knee suddenly, or if you twist or rotate your knee forcefully, you increase the chance of a meniscus tear.

A progressive increase of pressure is one way of avoiding a meniscus tear. The following are the most common symptoms you will experience if you have a meniscus tear:

    • Pain
    • Stiffness
    • Swelling
    • Knee locking
    • Instability
    • Low mobility

If you suspect that you have the injury, it’s important to visit a meniscus tear specialist or orthopedic for the most suitable treatment.

    Treatment options

Your healthcare provider will advise on the best treatment approach after the injury evaluation. The first line of approach is the use of conservative options, meaning you will not undergo surgery. You can use crutches to keep pressure off your knee and foot.

    Conservative options include:

    • Rest
    • Physiotherapy
    • Heat and ice therapy
    • Steroid injections

Before your orthopedic surgeon decides to perform surgery, they will evaluate the location of the tear. If the area receives steady blood flow, you might not need surgery. The blood supply will help the tear heal independently, and you can apply the conservative treatment options outlined above.

Physiotherapy and massage to the area will increase blood flow and help to heal. If you have pain, your specialist will prescribe medications you can use during recovery.

    Surgical options

Surgery is the best option if conservative treatments don’t work. Your orthopedic surgeon might use a technique called arthroscopic surgery, which is a minimally invasive surgery. The technique involves your surgeon making tiny incisions on your knee.

Through the tiny incisions, the orthopedic surgeon will insert a thin camera and small surgical tools to aid in the surgery. Using the tools, the surgeon will excise any damaged tissues and stitch the rest of the tear.

    Benefits of arthroscopic surgery

    • Minimal scarring and bleeding
    • Quick recovery
    • Lower infection rate
    •  Less pain after surgery

    Prevention

If you want to lower your chances of having a meniscus tear, it is important to avoid sudden movements that injure your knee. If you are an athlete or you lead an active lifestyle, you should keep the following in mind:

    • Warm up before your exercises
    • Stretch before and after you exercise
    • Strengthen your muscles to avoid injuries
    • Practice flexibility and avoid stiff knees or joints
    • Use protective gear for your knees
    • Get enough rest between your training sessions

If you have a meniscus tear limiting your range of motion, visit Beacon Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center for evaluation and treatment. You will meet qualified and friendly staff ready to offer personalized care. Call or book an appointment online for a quick and steady recovery.
