Great Mayan Reef, Mesoamerican Barrier Reef

Our number one place to snorkel near Cancun has to be the Puerto Morelos Reef. This is the world’s second-largest reef system, stretching along the coast of Mexico to Puerto Morelos. Snorkeling here will be full of vibrant corals and rich marine life in this natural reserve. National Parks are known for following strict regulations in order to keep the area safe for humans but especially to preserve the ecosystem.

Your dream of snorkeling in Puerto Morelos Marine Park can easily come true by booking a tour with Cancun Snorkeling, Snorkeling in Cancun is better here. Dive in and discover the colorful ecosystems featuring many different soft and hard coral types. Here you can spot various creatures from small sea slugs to rays and lemon sharks!

    Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Now, as the largest coral reef ecosystem in the world, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is of course on this list. Approximately  2,900 individual reefs stretching over 1,400 miles off the Australian shoreline, connect to build up this majestic reef. Bright, colorful, and live coral will surround you, as well as unique marine life, like barracuda, manta rays, and the structure of lost ships that crashed on the reef. It all builds up an amazing atmosphere.

    Los Cabos, Mexico

If you ever visit Los Cabos on the coastlines of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, you’ll be able to explore another National Marine Park, Cabo Pulmo, one of the three coral reefs in North America. The site is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is estimated to be 20,000 years old. The 800 species of marine life is the reason why it was named the “Aquarium of the World”. The place is filled with parrot fish, angelfish, damselfish, dolphins, sharks, and whales.

    Isla de Cocos, Costa Rica

Isla del Cocos is a former hideout for pirates hundreds of years ago, and today, as it’s renowned for its natural treasures, it was renamed “Treasure Island”. It is located 340 miles off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, and it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site and the only island in the eastern Pacific with tropical rainforest. What’s amazing about this place is the fact that it’s situated atop an ancient volcanic mountain.

The island’s emerald waters are home to an incredible amount of marine life that thrives among the extinct volcano’s tunnels, caves, and coral reefs. Cocos Island is definitely one of the best places to snorkel in the world. Dive in and swim with manta rays, moray eels, bottlenose dolphins, the occasional whale shark, and schools of hammerhead sharks.

    Baa Atoll, Maldives

If you ever visit the southwest part of India, you’ll find yourself in the Maldives. One of the most photogenic places to snorkel on this list. Its raw beauty has no comparison, surrounded by 1,200 picture-perfect coral islands, hundreds of fish species, sharks, octopuses, and manta rays call this place home.

The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll is one of the Maldives’ 26 geographical atolls. It supports one of the largest groups of coral reefs in the Indian Ocean, and hundreds of manta rays gather to take advantage of the zooplankton trapped in the bays from June to November. Jump in and explore one of the most amazing places to snorkel.

    Maui, Hawaii, US

The sunny island of Maui creates another unique scene for snorkeling. As a land of volcanoes, lava rocks, and big vegetation, Maui is of course on the list of best places to snorkel in the world. Here, you don’t need to go far from the shore to start seeing the amazing marine life. Most of the time, if you are patient and have a good eye, you can spot many fish, sea turtles, and coral formations.

Of course, there’s no denying that off the shores of Maui are some of the most remarkable reefs and marine habitats. Snorkeling is great, but scuba diving is even better! For either activity, you’ll easily find guides and tours that provide you with the equipment needed and the best recommendations.

    Isla Holbox, Mexico

Not many know about our last but not least amazing, favorite place to snorkel in the world. Isla Holbox is a small town a couple of hours from Cancun. And even though Cancun and Tulum normally get all the attention, Holbox has made itself known as a top ecotourism destination for swimming with whale sharks. Also, famous for its bioluminescence, Isla Holbox is not only one of the best places to snorkel in the world, but also one of the best destinations to really get away and disconnect from the rush of the world.

In sites like Holbox, which is less crowded and still much less invaded, it’s easier to witness sea turtles, manta rays, and dolphins.
