When customers visit an establishment for the first time, they enter through the lobby. If they must wait to meet with someone, this is the area where they will sit or stand until they can be helped. The first impression of the lobby determines their feelings about the company. With the right lobby design, a company finds it can improve a guest’s mood, ensure people flow freely through the space, and encourage interaction. What should a person consider when designing a lobby to ensure it achieves these goals?

    The Personality of the Business

Customers should be able to recognize the business the moment they walk through the doors. For example, take away the McDonald’s sign outside a restaurant. The customer could identify the restaurant as soon as they walk through the doors because it has a look that’s not found in other restaurant chains. Each business needs to show its personality in the lobby, as this encourages guests to come in and learn more about the company.

If a person walks into a conservative law firm and hears loud hip-hop music and sees administrative assistants in casual dress, they may choose to walk out. This first impression is important, so ensure the lobby reflects the personality of the business while helping it stand apart from competitors. When doing space design for your lobby, keep this in mind.

    Health Considerations

The global pandemic changed the way consumers do business today. They don’t want to be crowded together and prefer to have space between themselves and strangers. Although business owners need to make the most of each space, they want their clients and customers to feel comfortable when visiting the establishment.

Many people don’t realize an open ceiling provides an excellent place for germs to hide and thrive. Consider a closed ceiling and flood the area with natural light. This allows people to feel comfortable which, in turn, improves their mood. Individual is more likely to have a favorable impression of the business when they are happy.

    Reinforce the Brand

Use the lobby to reinforce the brand in the customer’s mind. For example, have the logo prominently displayed in the lobby and scatter marketing materials throughout the space. Visitors may view these materials as they wait to be helped. An established business may also choose to display prestigious awards in the lobby to provide customers with a better understanding of the business and its work. It never hurts to display art in the lobby. The selected pieces give visitors a view into the personality of the owners and may make them feel more comfortable doing business with the company.

    Accessibility Considerations

Ensure guests can easily access the lobby and move through the space without difficulty. Keep peak loads in mind when doing so to ensure the space remains functional during busy times. In addition, choose materials that are durable. Shoddy materials in the workplace leave a visitor with a negative impression of the business and can also become safety concerns as they wear.

A lobby should identify the business the moment a person walks through the doors. Business owners may decide to cut corners when designing this portion of the workplace, but they shouldn’t. Although employee workspaces need to be a priority to encourage efficiency and productivity, they won’t be of much use if there are no customers to serve. Keep this in mind, and carefully plan the lobby design. The right design draws people in and makes them want to stay. Ensure your lobby is achieving this goal to achieve outstanding results.

    Overview

Designing a lobby space can be a daunting task as it’s the first impression of any building or establishment. A well-designed lobby space can not only create a welcoming atmosphere but can also communicate the brand identity and values. Here’s a unique overview of designing your lobby space:

    • Start with the basics: Understand the lobby space’s size, shape, and purpose. Consider factors like foot traffic, lighting, and acoustics.
    • Focus on the user experience: The lobby should cater to the users’ needs. Design a layout that allows easy navigation and accessibility.
    • Create a focal point: Use a statement piece like artwork, furniture, or a unique lighting fixture to draw attention and create a lasting impression.
    • Communicate the brand: Use colors, materials, and textures that reflect the brand identity and values. Incorporate branding elements like logos or slogans to create a cohesive visual identity.
    • Add functionality: Incorporate practical features like seating, charging stations, and storage to make the lobby space more functional.
    • Incorporate technology: Utilize technology like digital screens, touchless entry systems, and smart lighting to enhance the user experience and streamline processes.
    • Consider sustainability: Use sustainable materials, energy-efficient lighting, and greenery to create a more eco-friendly lobby space.
