In this day and age, with prices of pretty much everything shooting through the roof, maintaining your home is more important than ever. General wear and tear takes a toll on a number of different items, fittings and appliances in your home, as well as the potential of accidents happening. But luckily for you, we’ve compiled some of the best home maintenance tips to help you make the most out of your homeware.

    • Don’t mess with your appliances
    • Test your appliances regularly
    • Replace batteries in alarm systems
    • Bleed your radiators
    • Clear your gutters
    • Draught-proof your home
    • Deep clean every now and then

    1. Don’t mess with your appliances

Whilst you may be tempted to give your household appliances a makeover, some things aren’t meant to be altered. Unlike your walls, household appliances and fittings aren’t the most flexible when it comes to being tampered with. Take radiators for example, you may think that giving it a fresh like of paint or installing a radiator cover can help to make it look pretty. But in reality, having a radiator cover does more harm than good.

    1. Test your appliances regularly

The key to keeping your household items in working order is by testing them regularly. This goes for anything from your smoke alarms, to your boiler to your freezer. Ensuring that they work properly means that you can trust that your family will remain safe if any accidents happen.

    1. Replace batteries in alarm systems

You should change the batteries in your alarm systems every year to ensure that you won’t be caught off guard by any accidents or unexpected occurrences. If you don’t, you risk damage to your home that will cost you much more than batteries.

    1. Bleed your radiators

Radiator maintenance can seem extremely daunting for the average homeowner. However, it’s not as complex as it seems. Anyone can maintain their own radiators, and bleeding is quite a simple process. When done yearly, it can help to keep your radiators in top working condition and avoid having a build up of air in your pipes. This directly affects your radiator’s performance and can also cause you to overspend on your heating bills.

    1. Clear your gutters

A huge part of home maintenance is avoiding small issues from becoming large ones. A key area to think about is your gutters. Over time and with changes in the weather, they can become filled with leaves and other debris. If not cleared, they can become damaged and even break off of the side of your home. In reality, it’s a matter of getting up on the ladder (or paying someone else to) and clearing it out every now and then.

    1. Draught-proof your home

Draughts can cause a whole range of damage to your home, including mould and damp issues. There’s a simple fix though – draught-proofing. You can do it relatively cheaply and easily, and it can help keep your home warmer as well as saving you money on heating and having to foot the bill for any issues with damp.

    1. Deep clean every now and then

Spring cleaning shouldn’t just be in the spring. Having a deep clean of your home a bit more regularly is great for not just keeping your home clean, but identifying any areas of your home that may need repairs.
