QuickBooks has continuously maintained its market position for serving the accounting demands of enterprises, particularly small and medium-sized firms. It manages the company’s financial operations and performs miracles when it comes to accounting data management. However, this does not imply that it is error-free; users may discover issues when working with the software. Error 6189–83 is an example of such an error.

The error 6189-83 usually occurs when you try to open the company file. It is commonly encountered when a computer that is not a server is hosting a company file. 

Anyway, with the help of this post, we will learn how to rectify this agitating error forever. 

Triggers that Cause Quickbooks Error 6189 to Occur

  • QuickBooks is not functioning with full administrative privileges.
  • On the server computer, the company file is not stored.
  • The .ND and .TLG files have been corrupted.

Solutions to 6189 Error

Method 1: Update Quickbooks

  • Open QuickBooks Desktop, then Go to Help > Update QuickBooks Desktop, and finally click on the Update Now button in the upper right corner.
  • Now choose Reset Update and click Get Updates.
  • Close QuickBooks after the update is complete.

 Method 2: Download Quickbooks Tool Hub

  • First, download QuickBooks Tools Hub and navigate to your downloads.
  • QuickBooksToolsHub.exe can be found in your downloads folder.
  • Allow this app to make modifications by clicking Yes.
  • Now, select Next to install it, and then Yes to accept the licensing agreement.
  • Click Next, then Install (It may take some time)
  • When the installation is finished, click Finish.
  • Now, launch QuickBooks Tool Hub (Icon will be available on your desktop)
  • From the Company File Issues tab, you have to Run QuickBooks File Doctor.

Method 3: Modifying .ND and .TLG File

QuickBooks company files can be executed on a network or in multi-user mode using .ND and .TLG files. If these files are damaged or corrupted, QuickBooks Error -6189, -83 will occur, and renaming them will assist you in resolving the issue.

  • Open your QuickBooks company file in the following directory: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company File [Default Location]
  • Now seek for files with the.ND and.TLG extensions.
  • Right-click on them and choose Rename. At the end of the file, type “.OLD.”
  • For example, CompanyName.qbw.ND has been renamed CompanyName.qbw.ND.OLD.
  • CompanyName.qbw.TLG has been renamed CompanyName.qbw.TLG.OLD.
  • To confirm, click Yes.

Method 4: Run Quickbooks Database Server Manager

  • Firstly, download QuickBooks Tools Hub and navigate to your downloads.
  • Install the Tool Hub.
  • When the installation is finished, click Finish.
  • Now, launch QuickBooks Tool Hub (Icon will be available on your desktop)
  • From the home page of Tool Hub, you have to navigate to the network issues tab. It can be found on the left side of the screen. 
  • You will find QuickBooks Database Server Manager in this section of the tool. Click on it and the QBDSM will get initiated.

Method 5: Copy the Company Files to Desktop

  • Right-click on the desktop screen and select New Folder.
  • Now navigate to the current location of your company’s files.
  • Right-click on the company file and choose Copy (Ctrl+C).
  • Then, in your New Folder, right-click and select Paste (Ctrl+V).
  • Now, hold down the Ctrl key and don’t let go until No Company Open Window appears on the screen.
  • Click the Open or Restore an Existing Company button.
  • Choose Click Next after opening a company file.
  • Navigate to the desktop file you copied to a new folder.
  • Then click the Open button.

Examine the Location of Your Company’s Files

  • Navigate to the ‘Scan Folders’ tab.
  • Click Browse and navigate to the location where your company file is stored (.QBW)
  • Click ‘OK’ and then ‘Start Scan.’

Method 6: Restore Backup Data

If you’re still unable to launch Quick-Books after copying it to the desktop, it’s possible that your company files (.QBW) are having problems. You can address it by restoring the most recent backup.

  • Quick-Books Desktop should be closed first.
  • Right now, Hold down the Ctrl key and don’t let go until No Company appears. On the screen, there is an open window.
  • Open or restore an existing company by clicking the Open or restore an existing company button.
  • Select Click Next after restoring a backup copy.
  • Now, follow the on-screen prompts to restore the most recent backup.

Method 7: Using task Manager

  • Log in to your computer as an Administrator.
  • To open task manager, use Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  • To view the QuickBooks Process, choose the first option and hit Q on the keyboard.
  • Then, pick QuickBooks processes (QBW32.exe, qbupdate.exe, and QBDBMgr.exe) and press the End Task button.
  • Open QuickBooks Company File now.
