Zalmay Khalilzad Is Disappointed On Delay In Peace Talks With Afghan Taliban

April 20, 2019 By admin Leave a Comment

US diplomat and the Special Representative for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmai Khalilzad has expressed disappointment on the postponement of talks between Taliban and Afghan delegation in Qatar. Zalmay Khalilzad said in a Tweet that he’s disappointed because Qatar’s intra-Afghan initiative has delayed.

He further added that talking is a political agreement and a long-lasting peace process. There is no alternative to it, and he insists all the parties accept the list of participants who speak to all Afghan citizens. He also said that he is ready if there is any need for help. Worth mentioning here that the talk between both sides postponed after the objection raised by the Taliban on the number of members of the Afghan government delegation.

The Taliban showed a willingness to talk to the Afghan government delegation after the US’s desperate efforts to eliminate the 17-years long war in Afghanistan. The Afghan government published a list of 250 people for meeting with the Taliban which scheduled at April 16, including Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Chief of Staff Abdul Salaam Rahimi, former Afghan intelligence chief and runner-up of previous Afghan election Amrullah Saleh. The list also includes Afghan tribal elders, youth leaders, and 52 women. However, the Taliban objected to this long list and said that they do not want to meet so many people. Taliban spokesman Zahirullah Mujahid issued a statement saying that the list makers in Kabul should know that this is a conference in a Gulf country not the marriage invitation of someone in a hotel in Kabul.
