A lot of PC games have been turning to mobile devices to expand their audience and reach. World of Warcraft Mobile Is on Its Way
The announcement for the future mobile game came out at the same time the details for Shadowland’s Eternity’s End 9.2 update. The details about World of Warcraft mobile’s development were skimp, so gamers do not know what is in store for them. However, Blizzard has confirmed that players will be able to start creating their first WoW mobile accounts when the game launches in May.
Fans are worried that making a mobile version of the popular MMORPG might not be successful as the developers think it would be. With so little information to go on with, players are skeptical about how this game will play out in the future. The only known details about the game are its release and that it has been in development for years now.
Potential Versions of the Mobile Game
There’s been a lot of speculations about what form WoW’s mobile version will take in. Most fans have already guessed that the game will be set in the same universe as the World of Warcraft PC. However, gamers are unsure whether the MMO will feature the exact same content as the original version or a standalone content.
A Different Story
While most fans are sure that the PC version and mobile game will share the same universe, some gamers have theorized that WoW mobile will be set in a different timeline. The smartphone version of the popular MMO might be similar to Blizzard’s Diablo: Immortal which is set in the time period between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3. If the game follows a similar format, then it would make sense that its story will be set in a period between Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne and WoW’s storyline.
Though it is less likely, the mobile version can be used by Blizzard to hype up or set up the next major expansion for the PC version. Alternatively, the mobile game might be in the same universe as the PC version of the MMO, but it is detached from the characters the original WoW focuses on. This opens more opportunities for World of Warcraft mobile since the story can be set in the Outlands or in the former homeworld of the Draenei, Argus.
An Extension App for the PC Game
Blizzard has already released a Companion App for the original World of Warcraft game. This application provides players with easier access to several game features such as managing mission tables, champions, and accessing maps of several regions. The gaming studio might look into expanding the Companion App even further by dubbing it WoW mobile.
The developers of the mobile version could potentially further improve the existing app and add new features that would impact the actual MMORPG. These may be in the form of mini-games for resources, access to the in-game auction house, and managing players’ inventory and storage. Though this would make the app very useful, it would irritate a lot of fans since the mobile version is being hyped as a different game.
Skeptical Community
Whenever a popular PC game tried to expand towards a mobile platform, most gamers would be pessimistic about the move. This has been the initial reaction to other online games such as Fortnite and Apex Legends which have already launched their popular titles on the platform. Fans of World of Warcraft are also having similar feelings regarding a mobile version of the game.
Back then, Blizzard announced the production of Diablo: Immortal which is a standalone mobile title based on the original Diablo universe. Unfortunately, fans were disappointed with the initial announcement since they thought that the developers are taking away their focus in their development of the 4th Diablo. This sentiment has since mellowed down. Unfortunately, WoW mobile is receiving the same kind of treatment.
Whatever the case, we’ll will just have to wait for the gamae to be released before we can judge the smartphone version completely. With WoW mobile’s impending release in May, gamers won’t have to wait that long. Hopefully, Blizzard will release a standalone game where players can farm WoW gold in peace.
