Obesity is rampant throughout the world. Worldwide obesity rates have practically tripled since 1975, according to the World Health Organization. This is just one among many disturbing facts. The latest overweight and obesity figures (2016) show that among 18+ year olds, 1.9 billion are overweight, and 13% are obese.
A growing concern is that more and more young people are getting hit by obesity. The WHO reports that 39 million people under the age of 5 are either obese or overweight. In the age group 5-19, it is a staggering 340 million people.
The good news is that we know that obesity is preventable and reversible. The confusion usually lies with the dietary and lifestyle recommendations, as well as the struggle for people to stay away from poor dietary choices.
The diet that appears to be consistently associated with weight loss is a Whole Food, Plant-Based diet.
About Dr. McDougall
One of the significant studies around the subject of plant-based diets and weight loss comes from Dr. McDougall, author of The Starch Solution. Having studied the diets of many people and societies around the world, Dr. McDougall noted that genes appeared to play only a minor part in disease presence.
For example, he found that older generations of migrants in Honolulu were generally healthier and free of diseases compared to the younger generations. The dietary and lifestyle differences appeared to play a clear role in this, as the older generations continued eating a traditional, mostly plant-based diet and also maintained an active lifestyle. They were also healthy and slim.
The younger generations were more exposed to animal foods and processed-rich products, making them more sluggish and prone to being overweight.
Weight loss on a plant-based diet
Dr. McDougall then launched his own dietary program and managed to achieve significant results for its 1615 documented participants. The result was conclusive: Weight loss on a plant-based diet is achievable within just a couple of days.
The research noted that after switching to a oil-free, whole food, plant-based diet, participants on average saw a weight loss of 3 pounds or 1,4kg. In addition, the weight loss appeared to continue well beyond these 7 days (as long as the diet was maintained) until a base weight was reached.
