The Importance of Reading

Often students who struggle with classes in school can all be attributed to a lack of reading and comprehension skills in addition to an inability to relate to the material that is presented to them.  Reading does help you discover who you are and what you think about yourself and your place in the world by relating to the stories and lives of others.  By reading students learn to gain an appreciation for dedicating their time to a particular task and reap the rewards of a purely intellectual activity the same way they benefit from exercising and playing outside.  One of the most important reasons to encourage all students to read more is that it improves their focus and concentration.  By slowly increasing the duration of their reading every week a student’s ability to concentrate on all walks of classes will be greatly improved.  Reading websites online is not quite as beneficial as reading a book or an eBook.  We highly recommend checking out your local libraries eBooks that are available or even buying eBooks from amazon kindle store as they often go on sale for less than 99 cents and the app is free to download.  Reading also does wonders for a student’s ability to remember and improves their memory.  Reading also improves a student’s ability to write themselves and comment on the writing of others.  That aside the actual content a student is reading can inspire them.  Reading a book about Einstein might inspire them to study physics.  Reading a book about Steve Jobs might inspire them to innovate the world around them.  It is also important to realize that very few people will come out and say this openly, but reading does make you smarter.  If there was a magical way to make people smarter it would be by reading.  Reading also fires up your imagination and enhances your sense of creativity and enjoyment of life.  Funny enough reading before bed can help you sleep better as well.  So, for that reason we highly recommend brushing your teeth and reading a book before bedtime and brushing your teeth so you don’t have to see the dentist.  In addition to that reading will improve your critical thinking skills and help you look at problems with your math homework and other problems more objectively.  You will learn to see and think about things from different perspectives and that is really good for you.  That being said you might actually and hopefully if all goes according to your teacher’s sinister plan might actually start to enjoy reading and fall in love with it.  As a teacher myself that is really my only goal.  Make students fall in love with reading.  The rest of their lives will write themselves.  Sorry kids Netflix and video games and social networking does not cut.  Reading will change your life.  Reading is the greatest gift you can give yourself and your academic career.  Your tutor might be able to help you improve your essay writing skills, but no one can help you do the required reading other than yourself.  So, sit back, relax, and get lost in a book until you find yourself.
