LOS ANGELES (AP) —- Peggy Lipton, a celebrity of the revolutionary late 1960s TV series”The Mod Squad” and also the 1990s series”Twin Peaks,” died of cancer Saturday at the age of 72.
Peggy Lipton died surrounded by her loved ones, her daughters, Kidada Jones and Rashida, said in a statement.
“We’re heartbroken that our beloved mom passed away from cancer now,” they said. “She made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side. They said they’re feeling so blessed for every moment they spent with her. We can not place all our feelings into words, but we’ll state: Peggy was, and will be our beacon of light in this world and afterlife. She’ll always be part of us.”
The Los Angeles Times states it had been one of pop culture’s first attempts to reckon seriously with the counterculture and among the very first TV shows to feature an interracial throw. Lipton was nominated for Emmys and won a Golden Globe in 1971. The series addressed issues like drugs, the Vietnam War and domestic violence.
Lipton and music producer Quincy Jones wed in 1974, and they had two daughters. But they divorced in 1989.
She performed the role of Norma Jennings in 1990 in the TV series”Twin Peaks.”
“It was quite terrifying,” Lipton told The Times in a 1993 interview. “I had a push-pull thing inside me that I needed to perform it. I’d become so insulated in my life as a mom, and I did not understand how to pick up the phone and call anyone to put myself out there.”
