Instagram is currently blocking some hashtags circulating misinformation regarding vaccines.
Instagram spokeswoman Otway said this measure is supposed to counter fake info in the hashtags, in addition to articles with these hashtags.
As stated by CNN, Instagram took actions against the hashtag #vaccineskill after the CNN Business report on Wednesday which revealed that this hashtag featured among the highest results in a search with the term”vaccines.”
That means users will not be able to look for those hashtags, and clicking on such hashtags will not bring any results up.
To help set the standard for the hashtags which will be permitted, Instagram is utilizing information from the WHO and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Following suit, Amazon pulled a couple of anti-vaccine movies from Amazon Prime in March. After facing pressure from the general public and U.S. Representative for California Adam Schiff. That same month, Facebook introduced its strategy to counter the problem, stating it would reduce the ranking of pages and groups promoting false information against vaccine as well as blocking anti-vaccine advertisements.
Despite the efforts on social media to stop the flow of damaging content, CNN reported that particular hashtags connected to anti-vaccine posts like #VaccinesHarm still being used on Instagram.
Otway said the firm would keep on reviewing the hashtags.
