Bikes are a substantial investment to make. From being a mode of transportation to carrying a hefty price tag, you have more than enough reasons to want to take care of your bike. Here’s how to cover all bases to ensure you take good care of your bike to minimise damage and keep it riding smoothly.

    Store it properly

The first step to taking proper care of your bike is to store it properly. Poor storage conditions put your bike at risk of being damaged, stolen or being subjected to unnecessary wear and tear. Depending on the space you have, there’s a safe way to store any bike.

If you have a small space

Small spaces such as apartments don’t mean you can’t still store your bike inside them. You can get hold of a range of wall mounts that mean you can store your bike behind a door or on the wall.

If you have a lot of space

Those with a lot of space, particularly a garden can store bikes in a bike shelter or shed.

    Maintain it well

Good bike maintenance needs a good repair kit. From the right tools for the job to the perfect bike repair stand, you need to have all the kit you need to maintain your bike. Making minor fixes such as tightening your chain and lubricating your bike are easy things to do by yourself and with the right tools.

If you’re not able to do your own repairs, make sure that you take your bike to be serviced regularly, especially if you use it often. This gives you extra peace of mind too.

    Keep it clean

Cleaning your bike is a vital part of taking care of your bike. Especially if you keep it outside, it can be easy to forget to clean your bike, but doing so can cause you more problems than you think. Failing to clean your bike can allow debris to accumulate on your bike and affect its efficiency.

If you store your bike outdoors, cleaning becomes even more important. Being left outside means the elements can get to your bike much easier, which means you should clean it regularly to avoid things such as rust developing. To keep it in top condition, you should clean your bike regularly to ensure nothing is blocking its functions and that the elements haven’t damaged it.

Check your tyres and brakes regularly

Especially if you use your bike a lot, you need to check your tyres and brakes regularly. This is just as much for safety as it is for performance.

With your tyres, you need to make sure that they are inflated enough, in good condition and don’t have any puncture marks on them. If you do, then you should avoid riding until you can get new ones or the damage repaired. Your brakes are just as important to get checked and maintained as they pose a serious threat to your safety when out and about.
