Changing Magento URLs can make a positive impact on your website’s search engine visibility. But doing so often confuses many uses of the platform.
But why should we focus on changing our website’s URLs? What benefits does it bring and how do we even do it?

Why change URLs on your website
There are not many SEO factors that are proven to make a difference to your rankings, but urls have been shown time and time again to really affect your position in all of the major search engines. This includes Google as well as Bing.
When targeting a set of keywords, it’s always best practice to include your main focus keyword in your URL. A good example of this in practice would be having a category page’s URL that displays all microphones you sell as “website.com/microphones”.
This makes it easy for Google to understand what your page is about and has been proven to increase your rankings.
Is it easy to do in Magento?
In certain old versions of Magento, updating your page’s URL was relatively difficult to achieve. However in Magento 2 and beyond it’s become considerably easier.
It would seem that the developers at Adobe decided to make it easier due to popular demand based on its importance for search engine optimisation.
How do you change URLs in Magento 2?
After you’ve set up Magento for SEO friendly URLs, all you need to do to update them is go to the product or page you wish to change the URL of and open out the “Search Engine Optimization” tab.
Inside there you will see a tab called “URL Key”. This is the one that sets the URL of your page. Whatever you set here will be the URL for your page/product/post.
Is that all you need to do?
Sort of. Although that will technically change the URL of your Magento page, it could lead to a poor user experience without a 301 redirect.
301 redirects force the user and Google to go to the new URL you have just set your page to be when trying to visit the URL the page used to have.
This doesn’t only help provide a better user experience for visitors of your website, it also helps Google keep any potential rankings you originally had.
